Visiting the ksar

The ksar climbs a hillside above the Ounila River, with kasbahs, narrow lanes and a ruined granary (agadir) at the top, where the view over the valley is best at sunset. A few families still live inside. Cross the river on the footbridge from the newer village; some houses charge a small fee to enter.

Aït Benhaddou has appeared in many films and series, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Getting there

From Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, about 3.5 to 4 hours with stops. A detour leads to the Telouet Kasbah. Many Sahara tours stop here on the first day, and day trips run from Marrakech. Ouarzazate is about 30 minutes away.
