Aït Benhaddou
About 30 km north-west of Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village of earthen buildings climbing a hill above a river. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has appeared in many films and series. Cross the river and climb to the granary at the top for the view.
In town
The Taourirt Kasbah was a residence of the Glaoui family, who controlled the trade routes over the High Atlas. The Atlas Film Studios on the road to Marrakech offer tours of their sets.
Getting there
The road from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n'Tichka pass and takes about four hours. From Ouarzazate, routes continue east through the Dades and Todra gorges to Merzouga, or south through the Draa Valley to Zagora.
