What to see

The Portuguese City (Cité Portugaise) was built as the fortress of Mazagan from 1514 and held by Portugal until 1769. Its highlight is the Portuguese Cistern, a vaulted hall whose thin layer of water reflects the columns and the shaft of light from the ceiling. You can walk part of the ramparts for views over the harbour.

The long town beach and the resort of Sidi Bouzid make El Jadida a popular summer escape for Moroccan families. The old town of Azemmour is about 20 minutes away.

Getting there

Trains and buses from Casablanca take about 1.5 hours, and the coastal motorway makes it an easy drive.
